THE SOUVLAKI PROJECT
THEATER PERFORMANCE / 2024 / 50 MINUTES / GREECE
The Souvlaki Project takes us on a journey through the Greek islands to explore the essence of a place through the lens of tourism. Two Greek women working on the island and two American women in love weave a narrative around a souvlaki, ultimately discussing what ties us to a place.
Following the official participation of The Souvlaki Project at the 26th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival in podcast format, Nalia Zikou and FAMA bring Sofia Gourouliani’s story to life on stage, just before the start of our summer holidays.
Two women work in two different dining establishments on a small touristy Greek island. One is a waitress and table cleaner at the local “gourmet” restaurant, while the other works at the souvlaki shop as a griller and souvlaki wrapper. Their lives, intertwined and repetitive, unfold amidst the hectic summer work schedule, yet this doesn’t stop them from dreaming of travel, skies, and the future. Their routine is momentarily but profoundly disrupted one night when a pair of American women appear at both establishments, asking to eat souvlaki.
The Souvlaki Project starts with our personal and national bond with the beloved souvlaki and evolves into an audiovisual exploration of the concept of locality through the lens of tourism.
